BACKYARD, COTTAGE- STYLE GARDEN.
Designer: Nick Freeman
Location: Avondale Neighborhood in Jacksonville, Florida
Garden Style: Hybrid of Traditional and Cottage
Summer nights and backyard conversations.
This historic Avondale home underwent a major landscape transformation. The previous garden was tired and barren in most areas however there was strong structural elements such as a brick patio and pathway, privacy wall and an iron gate entrance. The landscape lacked unity and in areas felt very open and unfinished.
The clients had a desire for a landscape that was inviting, lush, colorful and a would be a comfortable space for them to hang out with family and friends.
The major design highlight in this project is the central “conversation circle”; a circular paver patio with a partial retaining wall. This feature acts as a visual focal point in the landscape and is also an important link between the different sections of the backyard.
The plant selections are a cohesive blend of traditional plantings typically seen in the historic district and a free flowing mix of perennial plantings more representative of wild spaces. The result is a landscape that draws you in and invites you to stay awhile to enjoy those endless summer nights.
